In 2006, Jay-Z visited Nigeria alongside with his wife, Beyonce. During their visit, the then Governor of Kwara state, Bukola Saraki who confessed being their fan, invited them to Ilorin.

While in Ilorin, Jay-Z was conferred with a chieftaincy title by the Emir of Ilorin, Alh. Gambari, who turbanned the rapper as "Serikin Waka" of Ilorin.

In addition, a road was named after him. The road was named, " Shawn Jay-Z Carter Road."
