An Advice message by Dr. Muhammed Yahaya to ASUU NEC-A senior lecturer in Usman Danfodiyo University, Sokoto
Incredible! ASUU members need to see this! A Student reacted.
Dr. Muhammad Sanusi Yahaya, a senior Lecturer in Usmanu Danfodiyo federal University, Sokoto which is also affected by the strike.
"I significantly align with most submissions by many Nigerians on the insincerity of government on a significant part of the FGN/ASUU negotiation. However, at the moment that may not be very relevant. What should be important at the moment is for ASUU NEC to quickly consider a category of members with the following attributes: members;
1) Who don't have houses of their own
2) who don't live in government quarters
3) who don't have rich families and friends to render significant help
4) who have until now continued to suffer loss of respect and their human dignity, largely because they cannot meet their obligations.
"For this category of members, telling them to endure and be resolute through the strikes is only a cheap talk, and not ingenious. What will be ingenious is to provide them with practical solutions.
It will be reckless for NEC, as they convene this week to ignore the plight of this category in deciding what happens next.
"One thing, which I believe will provide a significant succour is to provide a sufficient amount of money, in form of loan, for the members of this category to, at least, settle their rent, school fees of their children and take care of their health needs.
When people reach their elastic limit, motivational quotes may not work, doing and not talking does the job here.
"If this is not considered, then in my opinion, the same atrocities meted to members by the government would be the same metted to members by the union. Consequently, we will have no legitimacy and morality to expect the submission of members in that category in the presence of alternatives. The NEC must be tactical enough this time around to avert a disaster.
"I honestly don't take this suggestion lightly, I appreciate the implications".
M. S. Yahaya.
